Senate Approves New Student Loan Legislation to Replace Previous Bill

0

The Senate has approved the 2024 Student Loan Access to Higher Education Act (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill, following a review of the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) report, presented by Sen. Mohammed Muntari of Katsina South.

Last week, the bill advanced after a second reading, prompted by President Bola Tinubu’s request to replace the existing Student Loan (Access to Higher Education) Bill with a new one.

The new legislation aims to improve the implementation of the Higher Education Student Loan Scheme by addressing issues such as the management structure of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELF), applicant eligibility, loan purpose, funding sources, disbursement, and repayment procedures.

Tinubu’s move came after the temporary suspension of the student loan system, designed to provide low-interest loans to Nigerian tertiary students.

Additionally, a motion sponsored by Sen. Adebule Oluranti of Lagos West addressed the challenge of out-of-school children in Nigeria.

Sen. Oluranti emphasized the urgent need to reduce the current estimated 20 million out-of-school children, as per UNESCO statistics.

Sen. Oshiomhole, among others, urged the Senate to compel the appropriate agency to publish the percentage of out-of-school children in each state, highlighting the responsibility of state governments in addressing this issue.

American streamer Kai Cenat’s $5,000 donation turns a Nigerian individual into a millionaire.

The thrill and excitement of venturing into new territory were palpable, with Kai Cenat epitomizing this sense of adventure.

Since his arrival in Nigeria last weekend, American streamer and YouTuber Kai Cenat has been the subject of numerous headlines.

The content creator mentioned on his livestream that he dashed someone $5,000 on one of his stops in Lagos, unaware he had just made the unknown beneficiary a millionaire. The 22-year-old was surprised to see that his donation was the equivalent of ₦8 million, as calculated by Adesokan ‘Shank Comics’ Emmanuel, the Nigerian comedian who’s been acting as his Lagos tour guide.

On March 9, 2024, Cenat and his brother Fanum were given a warm welcome at the airport by his Nigerian fans. Shank received them with a merry band of singers and drummers and the viral clip captivated the attention of many as Cenat danced and grooved to the tunes. Comically, he was soon after given the nickname Femi Omo Werey by Shank who has been showing him around the city since then.

In the video uploaded to his YouTube, Cenat was excited to try Nigerian food for the first time. Shank took him to a local buka spot where they indulged in one of the popular Yoruba delicacies: amala, gbegiri and ewedu, and he loved it!

Cenat touched down in Lagos with a plan, and one of his agendas was to make sure to give back to the community, particularly to Makoko, one of the poorest slums in Nigeria.

He said “I’ve been wanting to come here and now that I’m finally here, the first thing I want to do is immediately and quickly give back. I have a large Nigerian support base and I came across a place called Makoko I did my research on it and I thought it’d be good to give the people what they need. I need to get that done ASAP before I do anything else.”

He was then taken to the riverine area called Makoko, and while there he visited the Children’s Development Foundation School and orphanage where he met with the 23-year-old principal. He was received with a heartfelt welcome from the children who applauded him and thanked him.

Cenat reportedly donated about $3000 to the renovation and development of the school and orphanage.

One of the highlights of Cenat’s stay was his trip to the marketplace with Shank. A viral clip captured the streamer’s reaction after learning that a designer duffel bag was being sold for the $14 equivalent.

“Hollup, $14? For a Louis duffy?!” he exclaimed in utter disbelief.

Shank also taught the American the proper way to haggle prices at the market, including the ever-famous tactic of pretending to walk away.

Cenat also linked up with Grammy-nominated artiste Davido and the two had a swell time! From the warm hug they exchanged upon meeting, to the jokes and banter, it was a sight to see. Excitedly Kai exclaimed, “Bro, You are a legend here!”

During dinner, Davido announced big news while opening up to Cenat, stating that his upcoming album would contain 15 songs and six features. Davido also encouraged Cenat to return to Lagos in December, promising him that the city that never sleeps would be more bubbly then.

Let’s not forget the thrilling ride in Davido’s Lamborghini! After dinner, the pair tore through the streets of Lagos in the fast sports car. And after that? They clubbed at an exclusive spot on Lagos Island.

It’s Not In My Character To Blame Past Govts, Says Tinubu

0

President Bola Tinubu says it is not in his character to blame past administrations for the socio-economic and security challenges in Nigeria as he is committed to taking the right actions to re-engineer the finances of the country and stay on the right path to achieve progress.

The President spoke on Monday at the flag off of Agric Mechanisation Revolution for Food Security in Minna, the Niger State capital.

Many current members of the Tinubu cabinet including Minister of Finance Wale Edun had blamed the current socio-economic and security challenges in the country on ex-President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year administration.

However, Tinubu, who took over from his partyman last May, said his concern is not to blame the past governments but to embark on the right reforms to set the nation on the path of prosperity.

“When you read the papers, some of us are confused whether to abuse the present or the past (governments) or make excuses for the future,” the President told the gathering which was graced by governors including the host, Mohammed Umar Bago, as well as agriculture enthusiasts.

“(It’s) not in my dictionary,” the President stated matter-of-factly, adding that his focus is to “take action now, do your best, re-engineer the finances of the country and stay ahead of the right path. Those who may be complaining now have to understand that perseverance and consistency will make a nation great.”

Nigeria is battling mass kidnapping, rising inflation, food inflation, forex crisis, economic hardship and high cost of living occasioned by the removal of petrol subsidy, attracting protests in parts of the country.

The Nigerian naira has seen a dip in the last nine months since the Tinubu administration collapsed the foreign exchange window. The naira experienced an all-time low, falling from about N700/$1 last May to over N1500/$1 at the moment.

The authorities have since turned their focus to cryptocurrency platform, while the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have embarked on many reforms including revoking the licenses of over 4,000 Bureau de Change operators.

The President encouraged Nigerians to make economic prosperity out of the multifaceted challenges confronting the nation. “It that time for Nigeria to face the challenge and make it an economic opportunity. We must care for people and harness our farming population, including livestock farming,” he said.

Tinubu also expressed his commitment to partner with governors to banish hunger while he urged them to pay the current minimum wage pending the upward review of the wage award.

Solution To Open Grazing

Furthermore, Tinubu said he is committed to ending economic sabotage caused by herders whose cows destroy farmlands.

The President said, “I know what it means as an act of economic sabotage when for roaming cows to eat up the crops and vegetations of our lands. I know it could be painful but when we reorient the herders and make provision for cattle rearing, (this will end).

“You are the governors who must provide the land. Provide us the land. I, as the President, I am committed to giving you in two, three weeks’ time, a comprehensive programme that will this problem.”

‘Student Loan Being Fine-Tuned’

He said the Student Loan programme and other programmes of his administration which ought to have commenced are being fined-tuned.

“The Student Loan Programme will commence. There will be employment benefits for our graduates. The social security programme for the elderly and vulnerable will commence. We are fine-tuning all of that,” he stated.
